You have a right of access to your health records. The Data Protection Act 1998 gives you the right to access information held on computer and in certain manual records. If you want to see your records you should make a written request to the NHS organisation where you are being, or have been, treated. You should give your full details in order that information about you may be located. There will be a charge if you require a copy of the information.
New Access
NHS England requires GP Practices to promote and offer patients the access to their electronic medical records. The Practice currently offers patients online access to book appointments and order repeat prescriptions, but as from April 2016 Practices are contractually obliged to offer patients access to some more detailed elements of their electronic medical record.
Due to patient confidentially and the Data Protection Act only the patient in which the record belongs to can have access to their electronic record. Elements of your record that can be viewed are coded medical problems, allergies and medications.
If you wish to have access to this, please ask Reception for the relevant form which you need to complete and bring in a form of ID. This form needs to be completed even if you are already registered for online access for booking appointments and ordering prescriptions. Once this is completed and if appropriate, you will be able to view your electronic record online.
If you have any concerns regarding any medical problems you see on your record, please put it in writing and then a GP can check your record for any discrepancies.
